A recent issue brief sheds light on the health care experiences of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) adults, drawing insights from focus groups held across Hawaii and the continental United States. The findings reveal significant barriers that these communities encounter when trying to access health care services. Geographic isolation emerges as a critical obstacle, limiting the availability of essential medical resources and facilities. Additionally, the capacity of health care systems is often inadequate to meet the needs of NHPI populations, further complicating their ability to receive timely care.
Language access also poses a substantial challenge, as many individuals face difficulties in communicating effectively with health care providers. Participants in the focus groups shared a mix of positive and negative experiences within health care settings, reflecting a complex relationship with the system. Moreover, mental health concerns were prominently discussed, highlighting a pressing need for increased support and resources within these communities. This brief underscores the importance of addressing these barriers to improve health outcomes for NHPI adults.
